Williamsburg VA’s Monsignor McCarron Takes The Slow Train To Lynchburg VA

By thestoneteam • October 30th, 2012

JAMES CITY – In a letter to the congregation dated Monday, Monsignor Michael McCarron announced he has been reassigned to a church in Lynchburg. The assignment takes effect Jan. 1.

McCarron, who has been at St. Bede for more than two years, told parishioners he was asked by Bishop DiLorenzo to make the move.

“The request is not an easy one to receive,” McCarron wrote, “but I am convinced that in my willingness to be obedient to his asking, the Sprit is speaking both to the community I serve and to me.

McCarron’s tenure at St. Bede was marked by the controversy over an attempt to build a 9,000-crypt mausoleum. Neighbors in The Meadows subdivision objected to the plan since some of the buildings housing remains would be located a short distance from their properties.

The project was shelved, at least temporarily, based on a Virginia law that prohibits cemeteries within 700 feet of a neighboring property without the property owner’s permission.

Another potential challenge emerged last spring when a bill was entered in the General Assembly that would’ve circumvented those conditions. The bill was entered on behalf of a cemetery company that does business in Northern Virginia.

Del. Mike Watson (R-93rd) worked to have the bill re-written to eliminate a loophole favoring the St. Bede project. The bill’s sponsors said the bill was not entered with St. Bede in mind.

In his letter McCarron noted that Father Timoth Keeney of Saint Ann Parish in Bristol, Va. has been assigned to St. Bede.

“I have known Father Timothy all of his life as a priest and servied with him for four years at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. I consider him not only one of the finest priests of our diocese, but also one of my closest friends.”
